About Team Fortress 2

One of the oldest online PvP shooters to exist, TF2 is a team-based FPS made by Valve in the year 2007. A lot of people don't know this but the original Team Fortress was actually just a mod for Quake. TF2 is a direct sequel. Matches in TF2 involve players joining either BLU or RED teams, and pick from a roster of 9 characters. It is completely free-to-play too. TF2 is supported by Valve's official servers, but it also has thousands of community servers spread across different regions. This allows most players to play the game at a pretty low ping.

Why Ping Matters in TF2

The gameplay of TF2 is extremely fast-paced, and the issue for a lot of these old games is that people who have been playing them from the start, are extremely good now. If you are not being able to react fast enough due to delay caused by high ping then forget winning any match. Tricks like rocket jumping or airshots are quite hard to pull off on high ping. For smooth and optimal performance, one should aim below 70ms.

Optimal Network Settings

Use the server picker available in the game and pick servers that have below 70ms ping. Use the console command 'net_graph 1' to monitor your ping and packet loss. Set your Max Ping to be less than 80 in the multiplayer settings menu.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Fixing connection issues in TF2: 1) Use our tool and find the server region with the lowest ping, then go in-game and pick that region from the server selector. 2) Verify the in-game files of TF2 to make sure that your are not missing anything. 3) Check Steam's server status, as it might be down temporarily. 4) Make sure your Firewall is not blocking the game. 5) Make sure that you don't have any VPN running in the background.

TF2 Network FAQ

What is a good ping for TF2?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 70ms. Pro players typically play at under 35ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 140ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

TF2 operates at 66Hz. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
