About Destiny 2

A direct sequel to the original Destiny game, Destiny 2 is an online FPS that is a mixture of the MMO and Looter Shooter genres. The game is a free-to-play title featuring both PvE and PvP elements. While the matchmaking of Destiny 2 uses dedicated severs, normal activities use a peer-to-peer system. The game has plenty of regional server throughout the globe, so that players from all corners of the world can enjoy a low ping experience.

Why Ping Matters in Destiny 2

Since Destiny 2 has high end PvE activities like Raids and Dungeons along with solid PvP activities, you ping is always going to matter in this game. If you have high ping then you will most likely miss your shots, have your enemies teleporting around you, and have hit reg issues. To avoid, that make sure your ping is below 70ms.

Optimal Network Settings

Destiny 2 heavily relies on your NAT Type. If your NAT type is 'Strict', then you won't find people when using matchmaking. So ensure that you have an 'Open' or 'Moderate' NAT. Since there is no way to actually check your ping in the game, use our tool to figure out your exact ping. Try to use a wired connection as WiFi connections tend to have different devices connected to them, which might cause interruptions.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Troubleshooting connectivity issues is Destiny 2: 1) Destiny 2 might be down completely. Check the status of Bungie servers to confirm that. 2) Make sure you are not using VPNs. What you can do instead, is use a server router app to get the servers with the lowest ping. 3) Make sure have an Open or Moderate NAT. 4) Lower your video settings to retain smoothness. 5) If you are experiencing high latency on Destiny 2, and you don't have a high speed WiFi connection, consider plugging in your modem directly to your system.

Destiny 2 Network FAQ

What is a good ping for Destiny 2?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 70ms. Pro players typically play at under 35ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 140ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

Destiny 2 operates at Hybrid P2P. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
