About Counter-Strike 2

CS2 marks a significant upgrade over the series. The game is powered by the Source 2 engine from Valve which has drastically improved the graphics. Moving to the Source 2 engine has also allowed Valve to transform networking and hit registration in the game via a sub-tick update system. By steering away from a fixed tick system, Counter-Strike 2 makes sure that every input is registered instantaneously.

Why Ping Matters in CS2

Within the competitive scene of Counter-Strike 2, where every millisecond matters, low latency is extremely crucial. It is a known fact that the sub-tick system improves how CS2 processes the player inputs between ticks. But when it comes to those commands and how quickly they arrive, the physical distance of the player from the server is the only thing that matters. To make sure that you get a seamless experience, a professional player should aim for below 30ms ping, while casual players should be good with ping under 50ms. Ping above 100ms will start resulting in 'desync' issues.

Optimal Network Settings

To ensure that you get the best experience possible in Counter-Strike 2, you need to make sure that you have Steam Datagram Relay enabled if you want to enjoy the most efficient network routing. Another thing you can do is, you can set your Max Acceptable Matchmaking Ping between 50-80ms to keep high-latency servers out of the window. Also, make sure that you are using a wired connection over WiFi. Close any sort of application that might be hogging your bandwidth. Finally, type these inside your console: cl_interp_ratio 1 and cl_interp 0.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

If your ping is high or you are experiencing rubberbanding in Counter-Strike 2, you need to first verify that your Internet Service Provider isn't throttling your gaming traffic, and you are not running VPNs in the background. Typing net_graph 1 inside your console is recommended as it will allow you to monitor your ping and packet loss. Apart from that you can try changing your Steam download region. Make sure that your network drivers and your router firmware is up-to-date.

CS2 Network FAQ

What is a good ping for CS2?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 50ms. Pro players typically play at under 25ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 100ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

CS2 operates at Sub-tick (Dynamic). Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
