About Rust

Made by Facepunch Studios, Rust is one of the most difficult Survival games that we have at the moment. Despite being more than 12 years old, the game has a really strong playerbase, and is one of the most played games according to Steam Charts for quite a while. It is a fact that Rust has only 5 server reions. But this game mainly thrives because of thousands of community servers spread across the world.

Why Ping Matters in Rust

Despite being a Survival game where players mainly focus on gathering resources and building bases, the PvP of Rust is surprisingly hardcore. You have to be quick with your weapons or you are bound to lose. So for the PvP encounters, low ping is extremely necessary. Anything below 80ms should be good.

Optimal Network Settings

Before you start playing, always use the in-game server picker and pick the server with the lowest ping. If you find yourself lagging on that server, go back and pick the next best one. Do anything but try to avoid playing at high ping as much as you can.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

In case of connectivity issues in Rust: 1) Run a quick test using the tool given above and figure out the best server for your connection. 2) Try to pick servers with low player count. 3) Ensure you don't have packet loss by enabling in-game telemetry. 4) Check the server status of Rust to see if the game is down or not.

Rust Network FAQ

What is a good ping for Rust?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 80ms. Pro players typically play at under 40ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 160ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

Rust operates at Server-dependent. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
