About Path of Exile

Path of Exile is an action RPG by Grinding Gear Games(GGG). PoE is all about different classes, their skill trees, their huge spectrum of abilities, weapons, and a whole lot of loot. The game was released back in 2013, and the story has recieved mutiple extensions and DLCs so far. Even after the release of PoE 2, GGG makes sure that the game gets major updates, and the PoE still has thousands of players active. Path of Exile currently has 15 servers worldwide, so that players from all around the world can play the game without lag.

Why Ping Matters in PoE

Just to prove how much ping matters in Path of Exile, the devs have incorporated two different network modes in the game. Lockstep and Predictive. When you are in Predictive mode and you have high ping, the server has a hard time syncing with the client which results in the monsters appearing randomly in different positions and then disappearing immediately. On the other hand, when you are running Lockstep, the game complete freezes in case of any desync due to high ping, and waits until the client and the server are back on sync. These issues can prove to be extremely frustrating when running endgame content. Hence, keeping your ping below 80ms is highly recommended.

Optimal Network Settings

Make sure to pick the closest Server from your location from the server picker located on the login screen before you enter Wraeclast. Before picking the region, make sure that the region is showing less than 80ms latency. In order to monitor your latency, press the F1 key on your keyboard to bring up the in-game telemetry. Pick wired connection over WiFi if you are planning to play for long hours.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Fixing high ping and connection issues in PoE: 1) Perform a quick ping test using our tool to see what ping you are getting on the GGG servers. If you are getting high ping on all the servers then your connection might be facing disruptions. 2) Keep testing both Predictive and Lockstep modes to figure out which one works the best for you. 3) If you are facing lag on the closest server then select the next best server as the problem could be associated with that single server. 4) Playing games like Path of Exile on wireless connection is never recommended. The game eats a lot of bandwidth and a wired connection is the way to go. 5) Simple check the PoE X/Twitter to see if the servers are undergoing any sort of maintenance or not.

PoE Network FAQ

What is a good ping for PoE?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 70ms. Pro players typically play at under 35ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 140ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

PoE operates at Lockstep / Predictive. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
