How it works

We test round-trips (HTTPS) from your browser to AWS/Cloudflare or Game server endpoints if they're public or published by the developers. The first request is warmup, and then consecutive requests (upto 5) are used to make out an average. Browser tests usually add some latency, so in-game is usually lower.

Avg:
Avg trip time. This is what creates the ranking and how well your connection is doing.
Jitter:
How much the ping jumps across tests. Under 10 ms is smooth and acceptable.
Failed:
Requests to some servers might fail. We ignore these tests in results.
Grade:
Combined average of all tests across all mentioned servers.

About Grand Theft Auto V

Undoubtedly one of the biggest games ever made, Grand Theft Auto 5 or GTA V is nothing short of a masterpiece by Rockstar. The best part about the game has to be its massive multiplayer component known as GTA Online. This single feature has kept the game alive and popping for years. GTA Online is all about players completing missions, heists, take part in races, along with other players. Everything happens in an open-world setup.

Why Ping Matters in GTA V

Though GTA Online uses a peer-to-peer network infrastructure where the lobbies are actually hosted by players themselves. That doesn't change the fact that your connection to Rockstar cloud servers matters for matchmaking. If you have low ping then you will be loading into maps faster, and won't get kicked out of lobbies constantly. If you have high ping then you will most likely see other players teleporting around you and see the cars around you bouncing everywhere.

Optimal Network Settings

For the best experience possible when it comes to your connection in GTA Online, you need to make sure that UPnP is enabled in your router. This prevents your connection from having Strict NAT and allows P2P port mapping. Make sure to disable downloads that you have running in the background. Also, having a wired connection helps a lot when it comes to preventing losses and jitters.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Fixing GTA 5 Connection issues: 1) Make sure that your NAT Type is Open to avoid getting the infamous 'Unknown Network Error' constantly while playing. 2) If you are constantly getting kicked from your sessions, then you most likely have Strict NAT. In that case, configure Port Forwarding for GTA Online ports: UDP 6672, UDP 61455-61458.

GTA V Network FAQ

What is a good ping for GTA V?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 80ms. Pro players typically play at under 40ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 160ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

GTA V operates at 30Hz. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
