About Dota 2

Sequel to the original Dota game, Dota 2 is a MOBA title created by Valve that is among the most played games in the entire world. With constant updates and an enormous pro scene, Dota 2 has really secured its place as the quintessential esports title.

Why Ping Matters in Dota 2

In an online competitive game like Dota 2, ping is one of the most important factors. From last-hitting creeps to game winning ability combos, everything is determined by your latency. Now, it is a known fact that compared to FPS titles, MOBAs can be a bit forgiving when it comes to ping. Still if your latency is more than 80ms then you could experience delayed reactions. Competitive players typically aim for 40ms or less ping.

Optimal Network Settings

To make sure that you are getting the best possible experience in Dota 2, here is what you should do: Open Settings > Network and make sure than you have set 'Network Quality' to 'I have a High-End Network'. Pick wired connection over WiFi and make sure that you have 'Display Network Information' enabled, as this will allow you to monitor your ping and latency.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Some workarounds for high ping in Dota 2: 1) Make sure that you are not downloading anything in the background. Be it updates or anything via your local browser. 2) Check which matchmaking region you are connected to and use our Ping Test tool to see how much ping you are getting on that region. 3) Experiment between 'High' and 'Low' network quality settings to figure out the optimal one. 4) Make sure you are not running any VPN in the background. 5) Try Flushing your DNS and give your router a quick restart. 6) Finally type the command '-ping' to see your latency details.

Dota 2 Network FAQ

What is a good ping for Dota 2?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 60ms. Pro players typically play at under 30ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 120ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

Dota 2 operates at 30Hz. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
