About League of Legends

With more than 160 million recorded monthly actively players, LoL can easily be considered as one of the most popular MOBA titles to ever exist in the history of gaming. League of Legends is backed by Riot Games, and they are known to invest heavily in their game servers and other network infrastructures. They have mastered themselves in optimal routing for players all over the world with their backbone network called 'Riot Direct'. LoL consists of a tick rate of 30Hz which means it is way more forgiving of high ping that FPS titles.

Why Ping Matters in LoL

Despite Ping in LoL not being as important as in FPS games, your ability timing and reaction-based plays are determined by it. LoL uses a prediction-based netcode which compensates a lot incase of high latency. But, initiating your combos at the perfect time, reactions, and dodging becomes difficult when your latency is anything above 80ms. While players in the Pro Scene tend to aim for 10ms when playing tournaments, 40-70ms is considered ideal for typical rank-climbing.

Optimal Network Settings

For best possible experience in LoL, enable 'Movement Prediction' in the game settings menu to smooth things out. Don't forget to close the LoL client after launching the game, as it will free up resources. If you are experiencing issues, use the Hextech Repair Tool, a built-in network tool by Riot, to diagnose.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Troubleshoot connection issues in League of Legends: 1) Contact your Internet Service Provider and ask them if Riot Direct Peering is available on your network or not. 2) Make sure that you are using the updated Client. 3) Use the Hextech Repair Tool. 4) Try flushing your DNS by launching command prompt as admin and typing 'ipconfig /flushdns'. 5) To fix your poor routing your can use a routing tool like ExitLag.

LoL Network FAQ

What is a good ping for LoL?

If you are looking to play competitively, you should aim for under 60ms. Pro players typically play at under 30ms. Just make sure that your ping doesn't go above 120ms as it will negatively impact gameplay.

Does tick rate affect my experience?

LoL operates at 30Hz. Higher tick rates lead to more responsive hit registration. Your actions and how quickly they are registered in-game are determined by your ping and tick rate combined.

Which server region should I choose?

Use our Ping Test tool to figure out your latency with all the regions, and pick the one with the lowest.

How can I reduce my ping?

Pick a wired Ethernet connection if you can, as WiFi tend to bring a lot of connection issues. Fiber connections are better than the traditional ones. Close applications that are hogging all your bandwidth. If you are going to use a WiFi router, just make sure you have QoS enabled on it. Trying Cloudflare or Google DNS can help in a lot of cases.
